PIDA is driving projects that harness Africa’s abundant renewable resources:

  • 1. Solar Energy: With the potential to generate over 10 terawatts, landmark projects like Morocco’s Noor Ouarzazate solar complex exemplify this capacity.
  • 2. Wind Energy: Kenya’s Lake Turkana Wind Power Project, with a capacity of 310 MW, is a significant step towards energy diversification.
  • 3. Hydropower: The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), planned at 6,450 MW, is set to become Africa’s largest hydropower facility.
  • 4. Geothermal Energy: The East African Rift Valley holds vast geothermal potential, exemplified by Kenya’s Olkaria geothermal projects that lead in harnessing underground heat for power.

Regional Energy Integration

PIDA promotes a unified African electricity market through:

  • 1. Power Pools: Establishing regional power pools (e.g., Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) and Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP)) to facilitate cross-border electricity trade.
  • 2. Interconnectors: Projects like the Zambia–Tanzania–Kenya Interconnector link national grids to balance supply and demand across countries and regions.

Grand Inga Hydropower Project

Located in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, this ambitious project could generate up to 40,000 MW of renewable electricity—revolutionizing Africa’s energy supply and powering tens of millions of homes across the continent.

North–South Power Transmission Corridor

This major transmission initiative will connect power-rich areas in North Africa with energy-deficit regions in Sub-Saharan Africa, enabling cross-border electricity trade and balancing supply across the continent.
